In the days after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the United States announced a wide-ranging war on terror. For the F.B.I., everything changed in an instant: The agency went from a focus on law enforcement to a focus on intelligence.
Terry Albury joined the bureau just before the attacks, drawn in by its work fighting child exploitation. His role quickly changed after 9/11 however, and he subsequently spent over a decade working in counterterrorism.
Around 2015, he began to deeply question his work. “I came home one day and looked in the mirror,” he said. “I’m like, ‘Who are you?’”
“This is not what I joined the F.B.I. to do.”
His disillusionment about the bureau’s workings led him to leak classified information to journalists. Today, we hear his story.
